Expressing likes and dislikes in German

English uses like for everything. German chooses between four words, depending on what you like: gern, mögen, schmecken and gefallen.

Activities: gern

For something you like doing, add gern after the verb: Ich gehe gern spazieren. Time and reason come before gern: Ich gehe morgens gern spazieren. There is more on this in gern and gerne.

Things and people: mögen

Mögen takes a direct object in the Accusative case: Ich mag meinen Deutschunterricht. Ich mag den neuen Kollegen.

Food and drink: schmecken

Beyond level A1, learners meet schmecken. The food becomes the subject, and the person who likes it goes into the dative: Mir schmeckt der Kaffee. (I like the coffee.)

Looks and impressions: gefallen

Gefallen works the same way, for things you like the look or sound of: Mir gefällt die Wohnung. (I like the flat.) Hat Ihnen der Vortrag gefallen? (Did you like the talk?)

Saying you don’t like something

Put nicht before gern: Ich gehe nicht gern spazieren. With mögen, schmecken and gefallen, nicht usually goes at the end: Ich mag das nicht. Mir schmeckt der Kaffee nicht.
